Wenn es geplant ist, photographiere ich Panoramaaufnahmen vom Stativ aus, aber hin und wieder auch spontan aus der Hand. Ich verwende einen Stativ mit einem Kugelkopf, der zusätzlich eine integrierte Drehplatte (Panoramaplatte) oberhalb der Kugel hat, siehe Übersicht. Dadurch muss nur die Panoramaplatte horizontal ausgerichtet werden, und nicht das Stativ als Ganzes, was mühsam sein kann, insbesondere bei unebenen Untergrund. Um das vertikale Sichtfeld zu vergrößern, wird die Kamera im Hochformat ausgerichtet und mithilfe eines L-Winkels am Stativkopf befestigt. When planned, I shoot panorama images from a tripod, but from time to time spontaneously also handheld. I use a tripod with a ball head that contains an addititional integrated rotating plate (panorama plate) above the ball, see Overview. With this, only the panorama plate needs to be levelled horizontally, and not the tripod as a whole, which could be tedious, especially for an uneven ground. To increase the vertical field of view, the camera is oriented vertically and fixed to the tripod head using an L-mount.
Zur Ausrichting wird die Kugel des Kugelkopfs gelöst, und die Kamera wird unter Zuhilfenahme der im Sucher angezeigten Wasserwaage horizontal nivelliert. In dieser Stellung wird der Kugelkopf arretiert. Durch dieses Vorgehen wird automatisch auch die Panoramaplatte ausgerichtet, sodass die korrekte Nivellierung während der gesamten für die Panoramaaufnahme erforderlichen Drehung gewahrt bleibt. Durch Rotieren der Panoramaplatte und Beobachtung der Wasserwaage lässt sich das überprüfen, und gegebenenfalls nochmals korrigieren. Die Brennweite wird nun so eingestellt, dass das größte Objekt, welches in das Panorama eingeschlossen werden soll, in den Sucher passt. Bei diesem Schritt ist ein absichtliches Überbelichten hilfreich, es führt zu einem hellen Sucherbild und erleichtert damit die Wahl des Bildausschnitts. For levelling, the ball of the ball head is loosened and, by using the level of the camera in the viewfinder, the camera is levelled horizontally. In this position the ball head is locked in place. With this procedure, the panorama plate is also automatically levelled, such that the correct levelling is ensured throughout the entire rotation performed to collect the images for the panorama. By rotating the panorama plate, and watching the level in the viewfinder, this can by verified and, if needed, corrected. Now the focal length is adjusted such that the largest object wanted to be included in the panorama fits the viewfinder. At this stage, a deliberate overexposure is helpful, as it results in a bright viewfinder image, making it easier to adjust the framing.
Die besten Voraussetzungen für das anschließende Zusammensetzen der Bilder zu einer Panoramaaufnahme sind gegeben, wenn alle Ausgangsbilder identisch belichtet wurden. Daher wird die Belichtung manuell eingestellt mit ISO 100 für minimales Sensorrauschen und einer Blende im Bereich der höchsten Schärfe meiner Objektive, also etwa bei F8. Mit der hellsten Stelle in der geplanten Panoramaaufnahme als Referenz, und unter Nutzung des Histogramms, wird die Verschlusszeit entsprechend angepasst, um eine Überbelichtung zu vermeiden. Bei einem hohem dynamischen Umfang des Panoramas, zum Beispiel bei Aufnahmen eines Sonnenuntergangs, können nun einige Bereiche zu dunkel ausfallen. Dies lässt sich bei der RAW Entwicklung meist gut korrigieren, wohingegen stark ausgebrannte helle Gebiete viel schwerer zu retten sind, falls dies überhaupt möglich ist. The best starting point for the subsequent combination of images into a panorama image is when all input images are exposed identically. Therefore, manual exposure is used for ISO 100, which gives the smallest sensor noise, and an aperture around the value at which my lenses typically are most sharp, i.e. around F8. While selecting the brightest spot within the envisaged panorama and using the histogram, the shutter speed is adjusted accordingly for avoiding overexposure. For a high dynamic range of the panorama scene, for example, for images of a sunset, now some parts maybe be too dark. Mostly, this can be well corrected for during RAW development, while highly burned-out bright areas are much harder to recover, if at all possible.
Bei dunklen Aufnahmesituationen können sich mit diesem Vorgehen relativ lange Belichtungszeiten ergeben. Bei Verwendung eines stabilen Stativs sind Langzeitbelichtungen von mehreren Sekunden möglich, ohne Unschärfe durch eine Verwacklung der Kamera zu erzeugen Daher sollten die Objektiv- und Kamera Stabilisierungsfunktionen deaktivert werden. Unbenommen davon bleibt natürlich die Unschärfe die durch Bewegungen in Teilen des Bildes entstehen kann. Beispiele sind Bäume im Wind, sich bewegende Fahrzeuge, Tiere oder Personen. Dies kann aber auch kreativ benutzt werden, zum Beispiel um sich bewegende Personen durch sehr lange Belichtungszeiten aus dem Bild zu entfernen, da sie nicht lange genug am selben Ort verweilen, um ein sichtbares Abbild in der Aufnahme zu ergeben. For dark situations, this procedure can lead to relativly long exposure times. For a sturdy tripod, long exposures of several seconds are possible, without creation of motion blur caused by camera shake, thus the lens and camera stabilisation functions should be deactivated. Of course, the setup does not eliminate the blur that can result from movements in parts of the image. Examples are trees swaying in the wind, or moving vehicles, animals, or people. However, this effect can also be used creatively. For instance, very long exposure times can be used to remove moving people from the frame, as they do not remain in the same spot long enough to leave a visible image in the shot.
Die Kamera wird irgendwo im Panorama auf einen kontrastreichen Punkt fokussiert, welcher in etwa in der hyperfokalen Fokus Entfernung der Kombination aus Sensor, Brennweite und Blende liegt. Bei dieser Einstellung ist das Bild von der halben hyperfokalen Gegenstandsweite bis unendlich scharf, siehe Schärfentiefe. Mit Hilfe vom Schärfentiefe - Rechner kann die hyperfokale Fokus Entfernung für die jeweilige Aufnahmesituation berechnet werden. Nach der Fokussierung wird der Autofokus auf manuellen Betrieb umgeschaltet, sodass diese Fokus Entfernung für alle Aufnahmen identisch bleibt. The camera is focused on a point of high-contrast located at about the hyperfocal focus distance of the combination of sensor, focal length and aperture. With this choice, the image will be sharp from half the hyperfocal object distance up to infinity, see Depth-of-field. With the help of the Depth-of-field - Calculator the hyperfocal focus distance can be calculated for the specifc shooting situation. After the focus is found, the AF is switched to manual mode, such that this focus distance is identical for all images.
Bei einem stabilen Stativ kann einfach der Auslöser betätigt werden, ansonsten kann die zwei Sekunden Auslöseverzögerung genutzt werden. Die Bilder des Panorams sollten zügig aufgenommen werden, sodass bewegte Teile nicht mehrmals auftauchen, allerdings an unterschiedlichen Stellen des Panoramas. For a sturdy tripod the shutter release can be used as normal, otherwise shooting with a two seconds delay may be helpful. The collection of images should be swiftly performed such that moving parts do not occur more than once, albeit at different places of the panorama.
Die Aufnahme erfolgt von links nach rechts, sodass die Bilder beim Import in die RAW Entwicklungs-Software bereits in der richtigen Reihenfolge vorliegen. Im Sucher wird die Drittel-Regel eingeblendet. Nach der ersten Aufnahme wird sich der Inhalt des rechten Bilddrittels eingeprägt. Durch Drehen der Panoramaplatte im Uhrzeigersinn wird dieser Bereich in das linke Drittel der nächsten Aufnahme verschoben. Auf diese Weise entsteht eine Überlappung der benachbarten Bilder von etwa einem Drittel, was der Software später das Zusammenfügen erleichtert. Dieser Vorgang wird bis zur letzten Aufnahme des Panoramas fortgesetzt. Die Breite der Panoramaaufnahme aus $N$ Bildern entspricht somit also in etwa $N \times 2/3 + 1/3$ mal der Breite eines einzelnen Photos im Hochformat. Im Idealfall ist die nutzbare Höhe des Panaomas die eines Einzelbildes. Jedoch kann ein wenig Spielraum zur späteren Auschnittswahl hilfreich sein, falls das Panorama nicht exakt in der Waage aufgenommen wurde. The shooting proceeds from left to right. With this, the resulting images are naturally sorted when imported into the RAW development software. The rules of thirds is displayed in the viewfinder. The first shot is taken, the right-most third of the image is memorised and, by clockwise rotation of the panorama plate, is moved into the leftmost third of the next shot. With this, an overlap of about one third is achieved for neighbouring images, which eases the stitching process. This is continued until the last shot of the panorama is taken. The width of the resulting panorama image consisting of $N$ images thus corresponds to approximately $N \times 2/3 + 1/3$ times the width of a single portrait-format image. In an ideal case, the usable height of the panorama is that of a single shot. However, a little leeway for the subsequent choice of crop can be helpful, in case the panorama was shot not perfectly level.

Diese Reihe ist exact in der Waage und die überlappenden Bereiche sind klar erkennbar. By way of example, the next row shows four input images (1-4 of 5) from a tripod-mounted panoramic shot of the Olympic Stadium in Munich, taken from the Olympic Hill in the adjacent Olympic Park. This series is exactly balanced and the overlapping areas are clearly visible.

Im Vergleich dazu zeigt die nächste Reihe vier Eingangsbilder (2-5 von 11) einer aus der Hand aufgenommen Panoramaaufnahme, diesmal quer über dis Insel Sylt, aufgenommen nördlich von Hörnum. Zwischen den Bildern dieser Reihe ist ein leichter Versatz, die Horizontlinie hat leichte Sprünge. Die handegführte Drehung ist aber ausreichend horizontal. Auch hier sind die überlappenden Bereiche klar erkennbar. In comparison, the next row shows four source images (2-5 of 11) from a handheld panorama shot, this time spanning the Island of Sylt, taken north of Hörnum. There is a slight misalignment between the images in this row, the horizon line shows minor discontinuities. However, the handheld rotation remains sufficiently level. Also here, the overlapping areas are clearly visible.

Die Bilder werden in darktable importiert. Eines der Bilder wird ausgewählt um Belichtung, Kontrast und eventuell weitere Parameter anzupassen. Diese Bearbeitungsschritte werden anschließend auf alle anderen Bilder übertragen, indem der Bearbeitungsverlauf des ursprünglich gewählten Bildes erst kopiert und dann identisch auf alle anderen Bilder angewandt wird. Auf diese Weise lässt sich der ganze Informationsgehalt der RAW-Datei nutzen. Im Gegensatz dazu stehen nach dem Zusammenfügen (Stitching) nur noch TIFF-Dateien zur Verfügung. Daher sollten nach dem Zusammenfügen nur noch kleine Korrekturen, z.B. am Bildausschnitt vorgenommen werden. Die entwickelten Bilder werden anschließend als JPEG-Datei exportiert. Da die Größe der Summe aller N Bilddateien die Größe der Datei der Panoramaaufname bestimmt, wird beim Bildexport über die gewünschte Qualität entschieden. The RAW-files are imported into darktable. One of the images is selected to adjust the exposure, the contrast and eventually also other parameters. The very same processing steps are subsequently applied to all other images, by copying the history of the initially chosen image and pasting it to all others. This way, one can profit from the full information in the RAW-file. In contrast, after stitching only TIFF-files are available. Therefore, after stitching only minor adjustments, such as to the image crop, should be made. The developed images are then exported as JPEG-files. Since the size of the of the sum of the N images determines the size of the panorama image, at image export a decision about the wanted quality is made.
Diese JPEG-Dateien werden in die Hugin Software, ein leistungsstarkes Open-Source Programm zum Erstellen von Panoramaaufnahmen, importiert. Die Hugin Webseite enthält Links zu verschiedenen Anleitungen welche die Verwendung der Software erläutern. Bislang habe ich nur einzeilige Panoramaaufnahmen erstellt. Dank des hohen Kontrasts und der starken Überlappung meiner Ausgangsbilder war die horizontale Suche der Ankerpunkte mithilfe der automatischen Stitching Funktion ausreichend, und das Zusammenfügen stets erfolgreich. Sollte dies nicht zum Erfolg führen, lässt sich Hugin unterstützen indem man die Seite-an-Seite Ansichten benachbarter Bilder nutzt und dort manuell identische Punkte in benachbarten Bildern markiert, die dann als Ankerpunkte für das Zusammenfügen dienen. These JPEG-files are imported into the Hugin software, which is a powerful Open Source panorama image stitcher program. The Hugin website contains links to a number of tutorials, which explain the usage of the Hugin software. So far, I have only used one-row panorama images and, given the high contrast and large overlap of my input images, the horizontal search of anchor point of the automatic stitching procedure was sufficient and the stitching always successful. Should this not be the case, Hugin can be helped by using the side-by-side view of neighbouring images and manually identifying a number of identical locations in pairs of images that then serve as anchor points for the stitching.
Die zusammengesetzte Panoramaaufnahme wird als TIFF-Datei exportiert und wieder in darktable importiert. Dort erfolgt der endgültige Zuschnitt sowie, falls erforderlich, weitere kleine Anpassungen, bevor die Panoramaaufnahme als JPEG-Datei exportiert wird. The stitched image is exported as a TIFF-file and re-imported into darktable. Therein the final cropping of the image and, if needed, additional small adjustments are made, before the final panorama image is exported as a JPEG-file.
Im Folgenden werden einige Panoramaaufnahmen gezeigt. Bei den Ersten werden zudem die $N$ Ausgangsbilder nach der anfänglichen Bearbeitung in darktable gezeigt. In the following a number of panorama images are shown. For the first few also the $N$ input images after the initial darktable processing are shown.
